Wild Joe’s Is Closing in Downtown Bozeman After 25 Years
Another longtime Bozeman gathering place is preparing to say goodbye to its familiar Main Street home.
Wild Joe’s Coffee Spot announced on September 28, 2026 that its longtime Downtown Bozeman location will close after 25 years.
But there's an important distinction in this story: Wild Joe’s isn't simply choosing to close its doors.
According to owner Erica Brubaker, the coffee shop's lease at 18 West Main Street is being involuntarily terminated, and another business is already lined up to lease the space.
For a coffee shop that has spent a quarter-century serving students, professionals, families, retirees, visitors and generations of Bozeman locals, the announcement marks the end of a significant chapter on Main Street.
Why Is Wild Joe’s Closing?
The reason Wild Joe’s is leaving its Downtown Bozeman location is straightforward, according to the business itself: its lease is being terminated.
In announcing the news, Brubaker explained that after 25 years, the shop's lease will be involuntarily terminated and that a new business is already in line to rent the space.
That means this isn't a traditional business closure announcement tied to retirement or a voluntary decision to leave Downtown Bozeman.
Wild Joe’s is losing the space it has occupied for decades.
As of this writing, Wild Joe’s has not publicly identified the business expected to replace it, so speculation circulating online about the next tenant should be treated as exactly that until an announcement is made.
When Is Wild Joe’s Closing?
Wild Joe’s plans to remain open through the beginning of December.
The coffee shop is inviting the community to join them for a final celebration in the space on December 5 during the Downtown Bozeman Christmas Stroll.
That gives locals a little more time to stop in for coffee, sit at a familiar table and support the Wild Joe’s team before the Main Street location closes.
Wild Joe’s Has Been Part of Downtown Bozeman for 25 Years
If you've lived in Bozeman for any length of time, there's a good chance Wild Joe’s means more to you than a cup of coffee.
Located at 18 West Main Street across from the Ellen Theatre, Wild Joe’s has occupied a century-old Downtown Bozeman space and built its identity around being a gathering place.
Over the years, it became a place to study, work on a laptop, meet a friend, hold a conversation, see local art or simply sit downtown for a while.
The coffee shop has also made supporting the surrounding community part of its identity, hosting rotating art installations, events and community-driven displays while serving coffees from local and small-batch roasters.
That role as a gathering place is what Brubaker emphasized most heavily in announcing the closure.
She described Wild Joe’s as a space shared by the community rather than simply a business belonging to its owner, and reflected on the baristas, students, professionals, families and retirees who have gathered there day after day.
Could Wild Joe’s Reopen Somewhere Else?
Potentially.
The closure announcement leaves open an important possibility: December 5 may be the end of Wild Joe’s at 18 West Main Street, but it doesn't necessarily have to be the end of Wild Joe’s.
Brubaker specifically asked anyone interested in helping continue the Wild Joe’s legacy in a new location to reach out.
She wrote that community gathering places like Wild Joe’s need to continue to exist.
No new location has been announced, so there is currently no confirmation that Wild Joe’s will reopen elsewhere. But the public invitation makes clear that the owners are at least open to the possibility of its legacy continuing beyond the current Main Street storefront.
A Bigger Conversation About Downtown Bozeman
The Wild Joe’s announcement is likely to resonate beyond coffee because it touches a larger conversation happening throughout Bozeman.
What makes a downtown feel like home?
Buildings matter. Businesses matter. But so do the places where people are allowed to simply exist together.
Coffee shops have traditionally filled that role particularly well. They're somewhere between home and work, where buying a cup of coffee can give you a place to sit, meet someone, study, read or watch Main Street go by.
When a business occupies the same downtown storefront for 25 years, it inevitably becomes intertwined with people's memories of the city itself.
That's particularly noticeable in a community changing as quickly as Bozeman.
New development, new businesses and new residents continue to shape Downtown Bozeman. Change itself isn't new. Main Streets have always evolved.

Wild Joe’s Isn't the Only Longtime Bozeman Business Saying Goodbye
The timing of the announcement also makes the news feel particularly noticeable.
Joe's Parkway Market, another longtime locally owned Bozeman business, is also preparing to close in 2026 after nearly six decades.
The circumstances surrounding the two businesses are different.
Joe's Parkway owners have discussed a combination of rising operating costs, competition, staffing challenges and the demands of running the business, while Wild Joe’s specifically says its departure from Main Street is the result of its lease being involuntarily terminated.
Still, seeing two longstanding Bozeman names leave familiar locations within such a short period naturally raises questions about what the next era of Bozeman's locally owned business community will look like.
How to Support Wild Joe’s Before It Closes
The simplest answer is probably the most meaningful: go.
Order your usual coffee. Meet a friend there. Bring your laptop. Sit for a while. Tip your barista. Introduce someone new to the place.
Wild Joe’s is also collecting memories from the community for a memory window planned for December.
And on December 5, join the Wild Joe’s team during the Downtown Bozeman Christmas Stroll for its final celebration in the space.
After 25 years, there are undoubtedly thousands of stories attached to those tables.
